13 x Trance Kick & Bass Tutorial

Video Duration – 1 hour 14 mins

Playing it safe with your kick & bass combos because you don’t know what else works?

Feel like your tracks all have the same low-end energy?

Not sure how to switch up your bass patterns without losing drive?

Keep reaching for the same bass sounds every time you start a track?

13 x Trance Kick & Bass Lines

A walkthrough of 13 x different kick & bass combinations showing you the MIDI, layering, and processing breakdowns.

If you’ve ever struggled with getting your kick and bass to sit right in the mix – or you’re just bored of using the same combo over and over then this video tutorial is for you.

In this tutorial, I take you through 13 different kick and bass combinations, showing exactly how they were made from scratch – from the MIDI patterns, to the layering, to the processing.

These are the same audio samples featured in my 909 Kick Pack, so if you’ve already grabbed that pack and ever thought “How were these made?” – this is your answer.

Inside the video, you’ll learn:

  • How each kick and bass combo is created

  • What processing was used and why (EQ, compression, distortion, etc.)

  • The MIDI patterns and groove

  • Insight in to the sound choice/design

This isn’t a soundbank or sample pack – it’s a tutorial-style breakdown designed to give you insight and inspiration for building your own solid, driving low end in Trance or Techno.

Whether you own the 909 Kick Pack or not, this is a great way to understand what makes a strong kick and bass combo actually work – and how to recreate that for yourself.

I don’t use Logic Pro, I use a different DAW. Can I still use this video?

Yes. Please don’t restrict yourself from the knowledge inside this tutorial due to having another DAW. All the techniques you will learn in these videos can be implemented into your own DAW.

What software synths or plugins are used in this video?

In this video, I’m using a few different synths to create the basslines – but the goal isn’t to show you something locked to a specific plugin. It’s about showing you how the sound is made and how it works in context.

You can easily recreate/find similar bass sounds in whatever synth you prefer – Serum, Spire, Sylenth1, ANA 2, Diva, or most subtractive synths. Nothing here is exclusive to one plugin.

Other tools used:

  • LFO Tool – for ducking (can be replaced with any sidechain or volume shaper plugin)

  • Logic Pro with stock plugins – everything I do in Logic can be replicated in other DAWs using similar tools

In short: You don’t need the same exact plugins or DAW to follow along. The focus is on the techniques and sound choices – and they can be applied in pretty much any setup.

Brilliant yet again.

A brilliant little tutorial yet again. I love how Alan's always trying new things and showing us different ways of doing things. This is a brilliant little tutorial that's really in depth but quite concise at the same time. Just pure straight facts. If you're struggling with kick and bass (who isn't?), then this may be for you. It focuses on quite a few different basses, most of which I will never produce, but i'm always fascinated to learn how that sound is made. With Alans stuff you might not apply it to your sound but you WILL ALWAYS learn something new. GUARANTEED. As with everything on this site, the key focus is HIS MINDSET and HIS THOUGHT PROCESS behind it that matters, not the DAW, presets etc. There is never a bad investment when learning something new, so give this a go, you won't regret it!
